YMCA of Singapore (YMCA) will be having its annual Flag Day and we seek your support to raise funds for YMCA to continue to serve the community.
This year, our target is to raise S$100,000 and we hope to recruit 2,000 volunteers to help us sell flags. Your strong support is needed to help us raise the much needed funds to bring cheer and dignity to more than 2,000 less privileged individuals that we serve through our 19 structured and sustained community service programmes, in partnership with our 35 partnering voluntary welfare organizations (VWOs).
The YMCA of Singapore has been actively serving the community by developing and delivering structured and sustained community service programmes to bring cheer to the less privileged for more than a century. We reach out to the intellectually, mentally and physically challenged, out-of-school youths and youths-at-risk, under-privileged and abused children, the hearing and visually impaired, the elderly and the poor.
Volunteer registration for Flag Day 2012 is now open. If you are interested, please include your NRIC, Name, School/Organization, Email Address and Contact No and email to flagday@ymca.org.sg.
For enquiries, please call 6586 2342.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR YMCA FLAG DAY – Saturday, October 20 2012
Chunfa (not his real name) is intellectually disabled, autistic, hypothyroid and epileptic. He sought attention from his nursing home staff all day and night. He was extremely talkative, liked asking many questions and expected answers to every question he posed. He would throw temper tantrums whenever he did not get what he wanted. He would bite himself until he bled to draw attention to himself. He drained the energy of all those around him.
Chunfa then attended a Y Camp Challenge held in September 2011. He had to be double paired (with two volunteers instead of one) and caused a host of problems to his volunteer-buddies. He bit their hands every time they ignored him or did not respond to his questions. Chunfa would lay on the floor and refused to move. However on Day 2 of the camp, Chunfa’s life changed dramatically. He got particularly excited with the activities organised. He forgot about himself and participated, paid attention to the camp volunteers and bonded with other beneficiaries. He made friends for the first time in his life! He experienced fun!
Chunfa also learned to wash his own cutlery after every meal, something he snubbed at his home. He learned not to irritate others or to constantly ask questions. Since returning from the 3-day camp, Chunfa began to care for others at the home and he treasures the friendship mementoes his volunteer-buddies made for him during the camp. Y Camp Challenge, a YMCA Community Service Programme, aims to provide a platform for beneficiaries like Chunfa to be independent through outdoor activities like rock climbing, high rope course, Flying Fox, kayaking, dragon boating and swimming telematch.
