International Community Service
International Service Programmes - Touching Lives, Lifting Spirits!
YMCA International Service Programmes (ISP) reaches out to the less privileged and needy communities in Cambodia (Siem Reap & Phnom Penh) and China (Shanghai & Ningxia). Volunteers embark on expeditions that range from 8 to 16 days and come back transformed individuals with a deeper appreciation of the host country’s people and culture.
International Service Programmes @ CambodiaYMCA ISP @ Cambodia focuses on soft skills which include a sustained English programme, arts and music to village kids in the outskirts of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, home of the magnificent Angkor Wat temples. These village kids, aged between 4 to 20 are eager to learn English as a means to help them better their livelihood in the future. We also expose volunteers to programmes that involved the cooking and feeding of poor children and interactions with children studying in a school located in the fringes of a dumpsite area. Participants may also participate in a village road repair project which aims to improve the living standards of over 2000 villagers.
International Service Programmes @ ShanghaiYMCA ISP @ Shanghai focuses on interactions with under privileged “migrant” children whose parents come from the rural inland provinces to the suburbs of Shanghai to seek of a better living. The children can only afford to attend classes in private setups which are not well equipped. Volunteers are needed to refurbish certain parts of such schools such as the library, canteen & classrooms and also be involved in teaching and recreational activities.
International Service Programmes @ SichuanYMCA ISP @ Sichuan focuses on rebuilding the community after the sever earthquake that hit in 2008. Transfer of soft skills such as English and computer, as well as donation of furniture such as tables and chairs in some school is still very much in demand due to the lack of financial resources. Volunteers are needed to refurbish certain parts of such schools and also be involved in teaching and recreational activities.
International Service Programmes @ ChiangmaiYMCA ISP @ Chiangmai focuses on practical solutions to broad environmental problems. In Thailand, the usage of alternative fuels such as bio-gas has been promoted actively and volunteers are needed to assist schools to set up Bio-Gas & Environmental, Learning Centre, which consists of an environmental learning centre pig coop that contains bio-digester. At the same time, volunteers can also interact with the students in the school by conducting innovative educational programmes to raise the literacy standard and skills.
International Service Programmes @ VietnamYMCA ISP @ Vietnam focuses on the teaching of English and infrastructure setup in schools meant for children studying in the rural parts of Vietnam. Volunteers are needed to refurbish certain parts of such schools and also be involved in teaching and recreational activities.
