YMCA Co-Organises 4th Annual National Youth Chinese Calligraphy Competition
An inter-generational partner calligraphy demonstration included in programme
26 January 2012, Singapore - YMCA of Singapore will be co-organising the fourth annual National Youth Chinese Calligraphy Competition with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Chinese Calligraphy Society on Saturday, 28 January 2012 at the YMCA Lee Kong Chian Auditorium from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Guest-of-Honour Mr Seow Choke Meng ( 萧作鸣先生 ), Chairman of The Promote Mandarin Council (推广华语理事会主席), will be presenting the prizes to the winners
About 111 participants from 17 local schools will write Lunar New Year couplets and compete in the Primary School, Secondary School and Junior College categories. Besides the top three prizes in each category, there are also the coveted “Outstanding Guidance Teacher” and “Award of Excellence” prizes. The judges, members of the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore, are Vice-President Mr Anthony Ho (何钰峰先生 ), General Secretary Mr Lim Long Hui ( 林隆惠先生 ), Mr Lu Eng Wah (吕永华先生 ) and Mr Tan Thye Hock ( 陈泰福先生 ).
The annual competition has been organised to promote the appreciation of traditional Chinese culture, which is embodied in the perennial art of Chinese calligraphy, among youths in Singapore.
To promote harmony between young and old, there will be an inter-generational partner demonstration where one Senior from The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home (救世军安乐疗养院) will partner a child from the YMCA Woodlands Child Development Centre (新加坡基督教青年会兀兰幼儿发展中心) (CDC) K2 class and write a spring couplet together.
The NUS Chinese Calligraphy Society has been conducting free calligraphy lessons at the YMCA Woodlands CDC weekly for the past semester, and at The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home too, to immerse children in Chinese culture and to enrich the lives of the elderly, respectively. Nine K2 children from the CDC will be paired with a senior citizen and they will complete a couplet with the assistance of Society members.
The NUS Chinese Calligraphy Society is an active student organisation registered under the NUS Office of Student Affairs. Founded in 1996, the Society embraces the tradition of Chinese roots and aims to promote the awareness of cultural conservation in Singapore. Its recent activities included a Chinese Spring Couplet Delivery in cooperation with the NUS Central Library, talks on Kai-style calligraphy and a Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration organised by the NUS Office of Student Affairs.
