YMCA

Established in 1902, the YMCA of Singapore is a Christian voluntary welfare organisation (VWO), affiliated worldwide, which seeks to serve and enrich all members of the community, regardless of race, language or religion, through wholesome programmes to develop Body, Mind and Spirit, which are based on Christian principles.

As a youth organisation dedicated to serving the community, the three pillars of the
YMCA of Singapore’s work are namely service to community, youth development and volunteer development.

Service to community

YMCA of Singapore serves the less privileged locally and overseas. They include the intellectually, mentally and physically challenged, out-of-school youths and youths-at-risk, abused and underprivileged children, the hearing and visually impaired, the elderly and the poor.  YMCA of Singapore organises structured and sustained community service programmes, mobilises and trains volunteers to serve in them, to touch lives and lift spirits of the beneficiaries.
YMCA of Singapore currently serves 34 partnering voluntary welfare organisations in Singapore and works with its regional twinning YMCAs and overseas partners to reach out to the less privileged in Cambodia, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

Youth development

YMCA of Singapore invests in developing youths to build capacity for YMCA and the social service sector. YMCA of Singapore has facilitated the establishment of youth service clubs called Uni-Y (University YMCA) and Hi-Y (High School YMCA). Uni-Ys have been set up in SMU (2005), NUS (2007) and NTU (2009) with Hi-Y (2009) currently based in YMCA. YMCA of Singapore trains these youths and provides platforms for them to serve and lead through local and overseas YMCA community service programmes and social entrepreneurship projects.

Volunteer development

YMCA of Singapore recognises that volunteers are the backbone of all community initiatives and the importance of developing this invaluable resource into an effective force in the service of others. YMCA of Singapore develops the capabilities of volunteers through a series of training and development programmes, empowering them to better serve the beneficiaries they work with.
